The cacao tree originates from South America and has characteristic yellow-orange to reddish fruits. They contain cocoa beans from which various cocoa products are obtained. The fruits of the cocoa tree contain a high proportion of fats and the specific alkaloid theobromine, after which the plant also got its scientific name. Cocoa powder, which is an extremely popular ingredient for making sweets, especially chocolate, is obtained by first removing the fat from the fruit, then grinding the rest into a powder. Cacao was already extremely popular among ancient peoples such as the Incas, Aztecs and Mayans. Some have even called it food for the gods.
