Garden marigold is an extremely popular ornamental annual that is well known in traditional folk use. It grows up to 60 cm tall and has an upright hairy stem and leaves. Its flowers grow in baskets and are yellow to red in color and have a typical slightly honey scent. The plant contains many active ingredients, including essential oil, flavonoids, saponins, glycosides, carotenoids, bitters, mucus and organic acids. Calendula preparations are used as food to prepare teas, as they invigorate the body, have a beneficial and pleasant effect on the throat, pharynx and vocal cords, and have an effect on the normal functioning of digestion and the liver. Calendula is often a component of various preparations also in cosmetics, as it has a beneficial effect against skin problems.
